Singer Chris Brown has appeared in court charged with assault and making criminal threats, after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend Rihanna. He appeared briefly in Los Angeles Superior Court but did not enter a plea to the charges. His arraignment was postponed until April 6.
The 19-year-old was arrested last month following a pre-Grammy Awards party in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles police arrested Brown on February 8 after a woman made allegations of being beaten up by the singer following an argument in an affluent neighbourhood.
It later emerged that the alleged victim was his 21-year-old girlfriend Rihanna - also an R'n'B singer in her own right. Both had been due to perform at the Grammy Awards, but pulled out at the last minute as a result of the incident.
Pictures appearing to show Rihanna's swollen face after the alleged attack were later leaked online.
Despite the incident, it has been reported that the couple have since reconciled.
Court documents handed out before the hearing identified Brown's alleged victim as 'Robyn F'. Rihanna's real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty.
If convicted of the two charges - assault likely to cause great bodily injury and making criminal threats - Brown could end up in jail.
A spokeswoman for the district attorney said the charges carry a possible sentence ranging from probation to four years and eight months in prison.
According to police, the altercation took place in a car when Rihanna checked Brown's mobile phone and found a text message from another woman.
Detective De Shon Andrews wrote that Brown attempted to push Rihanna out of the vehicle before punching her repeatedly. He also bit her ear, according to the statement.
