Janet Jackson is happier with her body now than she was three decades ago.
The 44-year-old entertainer made her comments in the latest issue of Essence.
From the age of 11 to 13 Jackson played Penny Woods in the Seventies black sitcom series, Good Times.
But she claims that she was made to feel embarrassed about her developing body during her time on the U.S. TV series.
Jackson, who appears on the front cover of the magazine, said she had now changed her attitude: 'There comes a time when you don't give an F what people say or think.
'You just do your thing because it's finally about you and not in a selfish way but in a great way.'
The singer and actress appears in a steamy eight-page photo spread with CSI: Miami actor Adam Rodriguez.
In the fashion shoot Jackson shares passionate embraces with the 35-year-old actor, who in one picture is half-naked from the waist up as he lies on top of her.
Jackson is now writing True You, a self-help book with exercise and diet tips.
The actress who has had a long, public battle with her weight, says: 'I wanted to write this book because I wanted kids to have something to read and know that that they are beautiful as they are
'It took me a good minute to get here. It really did. But I love my life. I only wish I had this confidence when I was younger.
'Then again, everything happens for a reason.
'Maybe that's why it didn't hit me then. I'd probably have been hell on wheels if it had.'
Despite the death of her brother Michael last year, the singer says she is happy.
'I'm so fortunate. I'm a free agent,' says the woman who split from long time boyfriend Jermaine Dupri in 2009.
'I'm not trapped in a contract where I'm unhappy. I'm very free, and I love this feeling. I can do whatever I want.'
That includes dating younger men.
Jackson - who was recently spotted with Wissam Al Mana, a man who is nearly ten years her junior - criticises media comments about the age difference.
'It's horrible,' she says. 'It's really awful.
'And I have to believe it was a man that started that. Mother always raised us to believe that age was just a number.
'All of us - my sisters, my brothers - we'll just tell you our ages because it's all about where you are mentally and how you feel about yourself.
'You just do your thing because it's finally about you and not in a selfish way but in a great way.'
