Gardener Mark Walters, 48, had been keeping his wife Jenny prisoner 'for hours' after the breakdown of their marriage.
Armed police arrived at their semi-detached house after Mrs Walters, who suffers from a rare neurological disorder, rang 999 at 7.30am after he had let her go.
Officers found Mr Walters dead inside the house. It is thought Mrs Walters had recently told him their marriage was over, The Sun reports today.
The family had been filmed for next Monday's BBC1 home renovation show presented by Nick Knowles.
The working title of the episode was Dad In Despair.
According to The Sun, Mr Walters last week had smashed up with a sledgehammer the kitchen fitted by the TV experts.
And while being interviewed for the show he said he feared he would 'lose it' due to his wife's illness.
TV's DIY SOS show host Nick Knowles
The DIY SOS team arrived at the Walters' home in Bushey, Herts, last June after building work to their house stopped when Mrs Walters became ill.Mr Walters said the filming had 'taken his mind off what had happened'.
He added: 'They have almost let off a pressure valve in me, because I think if I had sat back and thought about what was going on, I would have just lot it.'
Mr Walters was looking after the couple's sons Charlie, 13, Brody, eight and Kurt, four. He was due to fix the four-bedroom family home that had no electricity, heating or running water.
But according to The Sun, the couple had drifted apart. One local told the paper: 'Jenny told him she didn't want to be with him any more.'
Two months ago police were called to the house after a domestic disturbance.
A police spokesman said last night Mrs Walters had been held hostage 'for some hours'.
Corporation chiefs axed the episode from the television schedule today. A BBC spokeswoman said: 'Following the tragic news of the death of a DIY SOS contributor, the episode will not be broadcast. Our thoughts are with his family.
'It was all about him coping in the context of his home because it was a very stressful time for them. That's why the programme-makers were called in to help.
