Ruben van Assouw, nine, was found still strapped in his seat after the Airbus A330-200 ploughed into a sandy field just short of the runway in Tripoli, Libya, on Wednesday.
Rescuers found the boy semi-conscious after the crash and he has since undergone four and a half hours of surgery to repair multiple fractures to his legs.
Ruben van Assouw, nine, is in Tripoli's El Khadra hospital, Libya. Dutch officials say that he may soon be able to be flown to the Netherlands
The young Dutch boy and his family - his 11-year-old brother Enzo and their parents Trudy and Patrick van Assouw - had gone to South Africa during the boys' spring school vacation to celebrate the couple's 12-and-a-half-year wedding anniversary, a Dutch tradition.
They were headed home from a dream safari in South Africa when their plane crashed in Libya.
Ruben slept peacefully last night, surrounded by a Tigger soft toy and bouquets of flowers in his hospital room. His left eye, forehead and slim torso were marked with bruises and scrapes; his left leg was immobilized in a blue and white cast.
