Samantha Cameron, THAT dress and a rescue mission by the firm M&S axed

Your M&S: Samantha Cameron, pictured at the Conservative Party Conference this month with David Cameron, had to have a £150 dress made for her by Marks & Spencer after the original collection sold out.

Spot on: Samantha Cameron at Tory conference

First we were told that Samantha Cameron's flattering polka dot dress had been put together from a leftover sample at Marks & Spencer.
But now it emerges that the story behind the frock that earned Mrs Cameron such widespread praise after she wore it at the Tory conference is rather more complicated.
In fact, M&S had to go begging to a supplier it had just dumped to get hold of the dress for her. Instead of being a £65 off-the-peg budget choice, it had to be hand-made at a cost of £150.
The Tory leader's wife was widely praised earlier this month for choosing the vintage design and modest price tag.
The grey and cream 1940s-style viscose shift was from the store's limited edition collection and had sold out within days of going on sale in the spring.
When Mrs Cameron bumped into Sir Stuart Rose, the executive chairman of M&S, at an awards dinner in June and mentioned she couldn't get hold it, he set about hunting one down.
Staff were ordered to scour the firm's 600 stores and the dress she finally wore was - apparently - a size 1
