British doctors have injected stem cells into the brain of a stroke victim in a 'world first' procedure, they announced today.
A team in Glasgow carried out the pioneering procedure on a patient who will be closely monitored for two years to see if the treatment is successful at improving their quality of life.
The technique could lead to cures for many diseases of old age including heart disease and Parkinson's.
The study, Pilot Investigation of Stem Cells in Stroke (PISCES), will test whether implanting stem cells can treat damaged areas of the brain for victims of ischaemic stroke. This is the most common form of the condition and is caused by a blockage of blood flow in the brain.
Around 150,000 people suffer strokes in England alone every year and it is the third largest cause of death in the UK.
The trial is being led by Professor Keith Muir from the University of Glasgow's Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology
