A Kenyan police officer killed 10 people dead during a shooting rampage through several bars.
Five men, three women and two police officers were among the dead and the officer - named locally as Peter Karanja - tried to shoot himself, but had run out of ammunition.
The officer is said to have opened fire after finishing his shift as a guard at the District Commissioners' residence in Siakogo, 74 miles northeast of the capital Nairobi.
Charles Owino, a deputy spokesman for the police division, said investigations were centring around claims that Karanja had discovered he was infected with HIV and was looked for his girlfriend whom he suspected could have infected him with the virus.
Police are also looking into reports he was angry after finding out his lover was having an affair.
Mr Owino said: 'He went from one bar to another and was shooting indiscriminately. Apparently he was looking for his girlfriend after he left duty.
'Among the 10 dead were two of his colleagues who were investigating the shootings.'
Angry relatives of the victims held protests this morning outside the police station.
Marcus Ocholla, police officer for the eastern province, said: 'Residents on the ground are very angry.
'They see us as people who kill rather than people who protect them.
'We as the provincial administration are trying to talk to the relatives of the dead people to calm them down.'
He added that the suspect in the shooting was known to have had a poor disciplinary record, but declined to give details.
