ADHD is 'in a child's genes' as scientists provide hope to ending bad behaviour stigma

ADHD.... Poor parenting or diets containing too much sugar have long been thought to set off the symptoms, but the study suggests genetic defects are involved.
Children with ADHD have a genetic condition, research has shown.
For the first time, a direct link has been found between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and differences in brain development as displayed in autism and other disorders, according to the findings.
Scientists at Cardiff University who carried out a study of almost 1,400 children say the results should help parents beat the stigma of ADHD, which has often been dismissed as mere bad behaviour.
Poor parenting or diets containing too much sugar have long been thought to set off the symptoms, but the latest study suggests genetic defects are involved.
The risk of having a certain set of genetic variants was twice as high among children diagnosed with ADHD compared with children who did not have it.
Professor Anita Thapar, who led the study, said ADHD was known to run in families but this was the first direct evidence that genetic factors were important.
She added: ‘Too often, people dismiss ADHD as being down to bad parenting or poor diet.
‘As a clinician, it was clear to me that this was unlikely to be the case.
‘Now we can say with confidence that ADHD is a genetic disease and that the brains of children with this condition develop differently from those of other children.’

America shows Britain how to deal with feckless fathers: Dad of 23 children by 14 women is JAILED for not paying child support

'Irresponsible': Howard Veal has been jailed for failing to pay some $500,000 to support his 23 children. The judge labelled him 'the poster child for irresponsibility'
An American judge has thrown the book at a man who has fathered 23 children by 14 different women - then refused to pay support.
Just days after it was revealed Britain's most feckless father had 15 children by 14 different women and relied on benefits to look after them, US judge Denis Lieber threw Howard Veal in jail.
Where unemployed Briton Keith Macdonald, 25, relies on taxpayers to pick up the £2million costs for child care, it's a very different story for Veal

Charged: Veal is led into custody by a Kent County police officer after being convicted of failing to pay child support
Judge Lieber branded Veal, who owes more than $500,000 (£316,350) in child support, 'outrageous' and 'an insult to every responsible father'.
He continued: 'You are the poster child for irresponsibility. You’re an insult to every responsible father who sacrifices to provide for their children.
'Animals procreate, human beings are supposed to nurture their children.'
The judge was so appalled, he far exceeded the state guidelines by sentencing Veal to up to four years.
Like Macdonald, Veal has barely worked at all over the years, instead choosing to live on benefits.
When he had a job for a few months last year, some money was taken from his wage to pay for his children, but it barely made a dent in what he owed.
The case against him stemmed from his guilty plea in July to owing one of the mothers - Sherri Black - more than $60,000 in child support. He’d paid just $87.75 over the years.
Made in Britain: Kevin Macdonald has fathered 15 children by 14 women - yet the taxpayer picks up his £2m child support tab
Using a similar excuse as Mr Macdonald, Mr Veal told the court: 'I was paying money from my unemployment. I never chose not to pay.'
His attorney argued that he was seeking training to become employed so he could support his children.
Mr Veal’s pleas didn’t move Miss Black, the 38-year-old mother of two of his children, aged 16 and 11, who was delighted to see him going to prison.
She said: 'My daughter doesn’t even know him. I’m pleased he’s been jailed but, I’d rather have him pay the money. Now my taxes will go to support him in prison.
'When I think about it, my children were in prison, too - a prison of poverty.'
She added that she met Mr Veal when she was a young woman and he took care of her until it came time to support their children.
However, Loretta Noble, the mother of four of his children with whom he lives claimed he had turned over a new leaf and was trying to be a better father.
She said she’d warned him that his philandering would catch up with him but added: 'He’s trying to overcome to be a better man.'
When the Attorney General’s Office looked at Mr Veal's notes they discovered he’d impregnated at least one woman every year and in three of those years, he’d conceived with three women.
Assistant Attorney General Mitchell Wood said: 'The Child Support Division has prosecuted thousands of felony nonsupport cases since its inception, but none as outrageous as this.'
He recommended that Mr Veal’s behavior warranted prison time because he was unlikely to ever make a substantial dent in what he owes especially as there remain 14 outstanding cases against him.

It's true! Men 'switch off' emotionally during rows while women become more clingy, say experts

The study found evidence that under stress, men tend to withdraw socially while women seek emotional support
Women who accuse men of not listening to them during a furious argument, may actually be right.
Scientists have found that men effectively 'check out' in stressful situations, while women become more responsive to emotional responses.
A study by researchers at the University of Southern California studied how men and women reacted to tense situations.
The found that men who looked at angry faces had diminished activity in the brain regions responsible for understanding how other people felt. In contrast women showed heightened activity.
Study author Professor Mara Mather at USC said: 'These are the first findings to indicate that sex differences in the effects of stress on social behavior extend to one of the most basic social transactions - processing someone else's facial expression.
'Under stress, men tend to withdraw socially while women seek emotional support.'
Writing in the journal NeuroReport, the researchers presented evidence that under acute stress, men responded less to facial expressions - particularly fear and anger.
A group of nearly 50 men and women were asked to look at pictures of faces under controlled conditions. Both groups showed activity in the part of the brain used in basic visual processing and in the parts used to interpret and understand facial expressions.
Then their cortisol levels, a known indication of stress, were manipulated using the cold pressor stress test

Now that's what you call awkward! Australia's Next Top Model host announces the WRONG winner

Anxious wait: Kelsey, left, and Amanda hold hands as they wait to learn which of them has won Australia's Next Top Model
Er, there's been a mistake: Sarah Murdoch has to tell the girls she announced the result incorrectly

It is every television host's worst nightmare.
And Sarah Murdoch, presenter of Australia's Next Top Model, was mortified when she announced the wrong winner on the show last night.
In fairness, the 38-year-old blonde had been fed the incorrect name via her earpiece - but that didn't reduce the embarrassment factor.
Murdoch had to cut short the celebrations of Kelsey Martinovich, 19, and reveal the actual winner was her 18-year-old rival Amanda Ware.
And the winner was actually... Now it's Kelsey's turn to put her hands to her face as Amanda is declared the real victor
As part of the winning prize she will be signed with modelling agency Priscilla's, receive a $25,000 contract to appear in a Levi's campaign, visit New York to meet with ELITE agency, get a Ford Fiesta Zetec, $20,000 cash and pose for an eight-page spread for Harper's Bazaar Australia
