A wave for the cameras: The Obamas are greeted by the French president and his wife. Michelle is described in a biography of Carla as 'the only one in (Carla's) eyes able to challenge her for the title of the world's sexiest and most glamorous first lady'.
Time for a little chat... Another biography about Carla refers to an alleged rivalry with Michelle and says it has strained relations between the French and U.S. presidential couples.
The claim has been denied by the US first lady's spokesman and by the French embassy to the US.
"Carla et les ambitieux," or "Carla and the Ambitious," published on Thursday, alleges Obama made the comments during a March 31 dinner at the White House with Bruni-Sarkozy and her husband, French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
However it does not make clear how such remarks might have been obtained.
The book, written by two French journalists, alleges that the two women were comparing notes about their experiences.
"Don't even mention it, it's hell," the book quotes Obama as saying. "I can't stand it."
Mrs Obama's spokeswoman, Katie McCormick Lelyveld denied that first lady Michelle Obama ever described her White House life as "hell."
The French Embassy in Washington also released a statement denying that Mrs. Obama ever said those words, with staff saying Bruni-Sarkozy "distances herself completely" from the book.
