Lucy James was born 12 weeks early and died at 22 days old. Her mother Leah and father Justin Scholbach were killed in a car crash as they drove home after visiting her
A tiny orphaned baby has lost her fight for life on the same day as her parents' funeral.
Lucy James's parents were driving back from visiting her at a premature baby unit when their car was ripped in half after crashing into a power pole.
Her mother Leah, 33, and father Justin Scholbach, 42, suffered horrific injuries and died shortly afterwards.
Lucy clung on to life after being born 12 weeks early on September 1, weighing in at just under 3lb.
But she finally slipped away at the Royal Hospital for Women, in Sydney, at just 22 days old.
Her parents had been close to their home just south of Sydney when the accident happened.
Lucy's plight moved the whole of Australia. Her mother already has five other children aged six to 15.
But she was Miss James's first child with her partner Mr Scholbach.
Family friend India Brent said Lucy's death had been very hard.
'She passed away this morning, wanted to be with her mum and dad I think,' she told the Herald Sun.
'(Lucy) was Justin's first child, a long-awaited first child. We're just trying to deal with this today and trying to deal with the next five minutes.'
